The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
How we work in Missoula
Special Olympics Montana is managed through local programs called Area Management Teams, most of which serve multiple counties and geographic areas across Montana. The success of our programs requires the collaboration of a multitude of talents and skills from dedicated volunteers. The Five Valleys Area of Special Olympics Montana is responsible for organizing, facilitating and overseeing events and programs for eligible athletes and volunteers in Missoula, Ravalli, Mineral, Granite and parts of Powell & Deerlodge Counties.
Company Overview
Every Movement has a heart and a story. Ours began because of one woman, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Eunice's sister was marginalized because of her intellectual disability. Eunice became furious about the neglect and indifference she saw toward her sister and others with intellectual disabilities. She had a deep faith that everyone counts and she loved sports. In a moment that literally changed the world, she saw how sport could transform the lives of those who shared the challenges of her sister. Special Olympics was born of this compassion, fury and action.
